The victim was knocked to the ground and taken to hospital for treatment to serious head injuries, including a fractured skull and two bleeds to his brain. He remains in a serious but stable condition.

It is believed the offender was in a larger group of people, including two women who had blonde hair. He got a taxi outside Harry’s Bar on Wallgate after the assault.

Officers have viewed some CCTV and believe the offender to be white, of large build and wearing dark clothing.

Detective Constable Kevin Telford, said: “At this stage we believe this was a totally unprovoked assault that left the victim with very grave injuries.

“We are reviewing CCTV from the town centre and are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time who may either have been making their way home from a night out or heading to or from work.

“I also want to appeal to the wider group of people we believe the offender was with as they are perhaps unaware of the extent of the injuries the man suffered and may even be oblivious to the fact that he has carried out this assault.

“If you were out with the offender and know who he is, please call us.”
