A MAN will face the court on suspicion of arson after a car was discovered on fire in Highfield.

Firefighters were called to the Peugeot 207 which had been abandoned in Merton Road at around 3.30am on Saturday morning and found the vehicle alight.

The crew from Wigan fire station who attended the scene were able to extinguish the flames and restrict the blaze to the interior of the car, with the back seats suffering the heaviest damage in the incident.

Due to the suspicious circumstances of the car being burnt out, the fire service passed the incident on to Greater Manchester Police, who have charged Michael Howard with arson.

Howard, whose last address known to the police is at Loch Street in Orrell, is now due to appear at Wigan Magistrates’ Court on October 8.
