Police are hunting a vicious thug who head-butted a man then slashed him across the stomach with a blade during a street robbery.

An e-fit of the prime suspect (above) was today issued by detectives as the search intensified for the hooded lout who struck in broad daylight just yards from Wigan police headquarters. The 59-year-old was walking across waste land between Scot Lane and Robin Park Road between 3.15pm and 3.30pm on Tuesday August 9 when he was approached by the man who asked for a cigarette.

But then the stranger suddenly grabbed hold of the victim’s rucksack straps and head-butted and punched him in the face.

The victim then felt a searing pain to his abdomen and fell to the ground.

When he came round, he realised his rucksack had been stolen and he had a 2ins slash wound to his midriff.

The offender is described as a white man with sun tanned skin, aged 22 to 25 years old, of stocky build, 5ft 6ins tall with dark brown greasy hair and dark stubble.

He has a broken nose, brown teeth and dirty hands.

He was wearing a black long-sleeved hooded top with the hood up. The top had two small pockets at the front and a draw string. He spoke with a foreign accent.

Det Con Lynsey Watson from Wigan Volume Crime team, said: “This was an unprovoked attack on a man taking a short cut to the shops.

“The victim is very shaken by this incident and left with a physical scar to act as a permanent reminder.

“We are asking for anyone that may recognise this man from the efit, or who may have seen someone matching this description on the afternoon of Tuesday August 9 2012, to get in touch with us.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police at Wigan Volume Crime team on 0161 856 5308 or contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
