THE Mayor of Wigan, Phyll Cullen, will take a longer than expected break from mayoral duties after undergoing a second operation as part of treatment for breast cancer.

Councillor Cullen had a mastectomy in November after breast cancer was found during a routine mammogram. She had a second operation after the cancer spread.

It means the Mayor will not be able to continue her duties for the foreseeable future but she is hopeful she will be able to return before her mayoral year ends in May.

The Deputy Mayor, Councillor Susan Loudon, will carry out mayoral engagements while the Mayor recovers.

With the dedicated care from doctors and nurses at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust Councillor Cullen is seeing first-hand the vital work being done and how money being raised for the new Cancer Care Centre through her Mayor’s charity fundraising will make a difference to people across Wigan Borough.

The Mayor said: “When you are faced with the challenging prospect of fighting cancer the care and attention from the doctors and nurses goes above and beyond what any patient would wish. The new centre will mean people like me and our families will be given even better support throughout this most testing of time for any cancer patient.”

The new centre is a joint partnership between Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust, the Christie NHS Foundation Trust and Macmillan Cancer Support. It will feature purpose-built clinical accommodation, 12 chemotherapy treatment patient areas, counselling facilities, a complementary therapy suite and a Macmillan Information and Support Service

The Mayor’s illness was picked up through routine tests and the Mayor cannot stress enough how important it is for people to make sure that they get their tests done as soon as possible.

“I had no symptoms so it is very important for women, who like me, do not enjoy mammograms, to find time to have it done,” she added.
