Meat cleaver thug told to expect prison

A thug who subjected another man to a terrifying early-hours chase wielding a huge meat cleaver has been told to expect a jail sentence.

Christopher Harrison, from Atherton, pleaded guilty to having the knife blade with him in public and also to possession of cocaine when he appeared at Wigan and Leigh Magistrates’ Court.

The court was told Harrison, of Devonshire Road, pursued his victim along several streets threatening him with the massive nine-inch blade at around 1.50am on March 4.

The victim also told the police he thought Harrison, 29, was under the influence of cocaine. Harrison will now go to Bolton Crown Court for sentencing next month but was told he can expect a minimum of six months in jail under Home Office guidelines on repeat offences involving knives.

Katie Beattie, prosecuting, told magistrates that officers tracked the alarming incident to Freshfield Avenue where they saw their informant on the phone pointing down the road.

Mrs Beattie said the police officer then saw Harrison discard a large object before heading into an alleyway where Harrison was arrested. A search of the area quickly revealed the large white meat cleaver concealed underneath a parked car on the edge of the pavement.

The court heard Harrison was rude to the officers while being taken into custody and at the station, where searches revealed the bag of white powder which turned out to be cocaine.

Harrison will now be sentenced at Bolton Crown Court on April 12. He was released on unconditional bail.
