He said: “I heard a bang and thought a tyre had blown, until I saw that my rear window was smashed. I pulled over in a safe place to find my roof severely damaged and masonry dust on the boot lid. The police attended but found no-one.

“I even sent an email to Manchester Council, just in case something had fallen from the bridge, but they found no damage or structural issues to the bridges.

“I am a train driver, so I’m used to things being thrown at my trains, but not my car.

“Had there not been a spare driver that morning, the services that I should have worked would have been cancelled. Had it hit my car around a second earlier, my next journey could have been in a hearse!
