The most car-crash-prone day of the year

After analysing thousands of claims, December 5 has been officially dubbed Danger Day with more accidents and collisions on this day than any other according to the Co-op Insurance.

According to the data drivers of Vauxhall Astras are involved in the most accidents, with men more likely to be in a crash than women.

Men have historically been involved in over half (61 per cent) of collisions on this day in comparison to 39 per cent women.

East Anglia, the Midlands and the North West are the regions where most accidents have taken place in the past, accounting for 50 per cent of claims on Danger Day.

The average age of a driver involved in a collision on Danger Day is 49.

Nick Ansley, Head of Motor Insurance at the Co-op, said: “From our analysis December 5 is statistically the day when most accidents happen on the roads.

“In the run-up to Christmas where the roads are busier with many making last minute trips to the shops, darker nights and icy road conditions the likelihood of accidents increase.

“We would urge drivers to take care on the roads this Saturday and not become a statistic.”

Road traffic experts believe that a host of elements conspire to make this particular day the most road accident-prone.

The Christmas rush is now well under way with the roads busier than usual.

Tempers are fraying at the congestion prompting some motorists to take unwise risks.

Last night will have seen the first big wave of works Christmas dos and people have woken up this morning feeling the worse for ware and less alert when at the wheel.

And then there is the weather, whether it be seasonal rain, wind, snow or even low sunshine.
