Although a hearing at Wigan and Leigh Magistrates’ Court was told no fault was attributed to Weigh for the accident.

The 20-year-old suffered a serious head injury and was taken to Salford Royal Hospital. His condition was said to have improved significantly in the weeks following the collision.

Weigh pleaded guilty to a charge of driving while unfit through drugs and magistrates were told he registered a reading of 3.2 for cannabis with 2 the legal limit.

Graeme Simpson, defending, said: “(My client) has co-operated fully with police and every independent witness said there was no fault attached to him for the accident but he has been very impacted by it.

“He offers no excuses, he had been in the company of people taking cannabis, he was offered it and he accepted.

“He is in full time employment and this is at risk as a ban will make it difficult for him to get to work. And his employer is not too impressed. He has been driving for eight years with a clean licence.”

In addition to the ban, Weigh was ordered to pay £503 costs.

Wigan was recently named one of the worst drug driving hotspots in the country.

The borough has been ranked joint eighth in terms of most people being banned for driving under the influence of illegal substances with 11 bans from 2011 and 2015.
