A PUBLIC consultation is to start next month for a new motorway link road.
Wigan Council has proposed to create an M58 Link Road, connecting the eastern roundabout of Junction 26 of the M6 and the A571 Billinge Road/Foundry Lane junction.
Under plans, the single carriageway will connect Smithy Brook Road with a new road across the former Pemberton Colliery site to Billinge Road, then across the railway to a widened Leopold Street. The road will then cross Brook Lane and join the M58/M6 roundabout.
The aim is to provide an alternative link into west Wigan and the town centre from the M58. It will also play a significant role in reducing congestion along parallel routes, in particular the A577 Orrell/Ormskirk Road.
A spokesman for Wigan Council said it will release more details on the consultation nearer the time.
Consultation was originally planned for earlier this year, but it has been put back.
