MOVING tributes have been paid to a Wigan schoolgirl who has died after a short illness.

Standish High School pupil Jemma-Louise Roberts lost a brave battle for life at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool at the weekend.

The 13-year-old had been undergoing treatment there after falling ill while on a half-term break in Wales.

Innumerable tributes have since been paid to the youngster who, by all accounts, was multi-talented and much loved.

The youngster was a gifted flautist which last summer took her on a tour to Germany, and she was also a proficient swimmer.

Head of Standish High, Lynne Fox, said: “Jemma was a lovely girl. She became ill and unfortunately her body could not fight it. She lost her fight for life on Saturday.

“She had been away on holiday in Conwy, North Wales, at half term when she started feeling unwell.

“At first it was put down to a normal virus but then the family realised it was more serious. They have had marvellous support from the hospitals: the staff at Wigan Infirmary, Manchester Children’s Hospital and Alder Hey have been magnificent in the eight days she was under their care.

“Jemma was a wonderful girl who was very proud of being a student here and who was very talented. Her brother is also a student here.

“She worked hard at, and enjoyed every opportunity she was given. She was a gifted musician and loved playing the flute: it brought her great pleasure. She also enjoyed swimming outside of school.

“At school she was a real all-rounder and worked hard at all subjects. She was a lovely, bubbly but very caring girl with a great sense of humour. She really did care and look after people and be positive for them.

“The family is now trying to come to terms with something that is not understandable. I have spoken with Year Nine and said we would jointly work on how to celebrate Jemma’s life but at the moment things are just too raw.”

Meanwhile the school has opened a book of condolence and is planning on a memorial service.
