Multi-vehicle crash involved "top of the range" 4x4 and mini digger

Police have been called to reports of a multi-vehicle crash in Lowton in which the driver of a 4x4 allegedly ran from the scene.

The incident happened at around 1.30pm today (Monday) at the junction of Newton Road and Lime Grove.

A witness to the crash described hearing a "loud screech and then a bang" as a "top of the range" Range Rover crashed into the back of a utility van carrying a digger.

According to the witness, the force of the incident was such that the digger - which was being towed at the time - came clean off the back of the van, sailing into a nearby driveway and hitting a parked car.

Both of the Range Rover's airbags deployed but the driver and a passenger were reportedly seen running from the scene before police arrived.

The driver of the van is said to be "very shaken" but has sustained no serious injuries.

Greater Manchester Police have released a statement saying: "Shortly after 1.30pm on Monday 9 April 2018, police were called to reports of a collision involving three cars on Newton Road in Lowton.

"Officers attended and found three damaged cars and no one was injured.

"Enquiries into the full circumstances around this incident are ongoing."
