During the struggle, Ms Higson fell onto the bed and the defendant fell on top of her. It was here be began to press his thumb into her eye which caused extreme soreness and redness.
Ms Beattie said their son was crying throughout the horrific assault.
In a statement read to the court by the prosecution, Ms Higson admitted their relationship had always been violent.
The police were called to the house where he was arrested. Dunne told his girlfriend not to tell officers what had happened.
A statement from the victim’s friend alleged a clump of her hair was missing from her head as a result of the assault.
Defending, Bob Toppin said that since Dunne had been on bail the victim had been actively encouraging him to see her and had wanted to continue their relationship.
