A FRESH attempt is to be made to sell off a former Wigan police station.
The redundant property on Warrington Road, Spring View, will be auctioned by Eddisons at the Premier Inn, Trafford Park, Manchester on April 8.
It is hoped the two-storey former station, which comprises offices, a recreation room, storage, toilets and a rear yard with car parking spaces and four garages, will fetch at least £100,000. The building extends to over 6,100ft sq and may offer redevelopment potential, subject to planning.
The station has been on the market before, selling for around £300,000 in December 2006. But nothing has been done with it since, but the owners did obtain planning permission for it to be converted to offices. It has been up for auction several times since but has failed to sell.
It is one of several ageing police stations which was closed by Greater Manchester Police as part of its property overhaul to get rid of its small sites which were too expensive to revamp. The policy did not meet with total public approval but thereafter more officers were based either in patrol cars or at temporary outposts at public buildings such as libraries.
Tyldesley police station was sold for £151,000 at the end of 2010 and the Ashton station was bought for £150,000 a few months later, with plans to turn it into seven houses. Wigan’s former headquarters on Harrogate Street, netted GMP a massive £1.7m when it was first sold in 2005 and is now about to re-open as a Premier Inn.
Other stations in Pemberton and Golborne have also generated £360,000 and £80,000 respectively.
Meanwhile, sites in Standish, Hindley and Shevington have also closed.
Tony Webber, Director and Auctioneer at Eddisons said: “We have assembled a varied catalogue which should offer something for everyone.
“With the general economy showing further signs of improvements and traditional investments offering meagre returns, I expect investors to continue targeting the auction room which is great news for vendors looking for a quick sale.”
