No let off for drink drivers

A WIGAN Euro MP fears severe policing budget cuts may see drunken drivers escaping punishment over the New Year.

The Chairman of the European Parliament’s Transport Committee, Labour’s Brian Simpson, is writing to the Chief Constables of Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Lancashire seeking assurances that Traffic Police will still be “visible and active” during the festive season against drunk drivers.

He said: “I know that Police budgets and frontline policing are under threat from Government cuts.

“But it is absolutely imperative that the crackdown on drink-driving is maintained in the upcoming New Year period and throughout the whole of 2011.”
