The 66-year-old from Downall Green Road, Ashton, has been remanded on conditional bail after appearing before a Liverpool Crown Court pending his trial beginning March 24.

The physical attacks and the picture-taking are all alleged to have taken place against girls aged seven, eight and nine, between dates in 2002 and 2004.

The still and moving indecent images, of which he is accused of possessing date from December last year and are almost 1,000 in number.

Pornographic pictures of children are graded on a scale of one to five in seriousness, with five the most serious. Those said to be in Barton’s possession ranged from one to four.

A condition of Barton’s bail is that he has no contact with four named females who cannot be identified for legal reasons.

Neither can he contact any 18-year-old unless it is inadvertant or he is in the presence of another adult.

And he must not take any work at a school or other establishment which might bring him into contact with under-18s.
