FEMALE staff were threatened with violence by masked robbers during a Wigan off-licence raid.
The gang fled with cash and cigarettes in the attack on Bargain Booze on Poolstock Lane, Hawkley Hall, at about 9pm on Wednesday.
Two women were in the stock room when three men came in and confronted them, threatening to hurt them if they did not give them money.
Fearing they would be attacked, the women obeyed. They were then told to go into the shop and open the tills which they did, allowing the trio to steal more money. The gang then ran across Poolstock Lane and then out of view. No-one was injured.
All three men were white, in their early 20s and wearing dark clothing. Two had black scarves covering their faces, the other’s features were covered by a white scarf.
Det Con Katherine Andrews of Wigan CID said: “Unless you have been the victim of this sort of robbery, it would be impossible to imagine how these two women felt to be confronted by violence in their place of work. It is not something the vast majority of people have to consider but there is no reason to accept this as an occupational hazard for off-licence workers – we need to find the culprits and lock them up and send out the message that the consequences for this type of crime will be severe.
“I would urge anyone who has information about this robbery to come forward.
Anyone with details should ring Wigan CID on 0161 856 5307, 101, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
