TWO prison officers have been cleared of beating up a teenage boy in his cell.
One of the officers, Stephen Hughes, broke down in tears in the dock after the verdicts were announced and was hugged and comforted by his co-accused Shaun Owen.
The jury at Liverpool Crown Court took more than eight hours to find them not guilty and the two men were discharged from the dock.
During their seven-day trial they denied that they had assaulted the boy at Hindley Young Offenders’ Institute and said he had been lawfully restrained.
The jury of eight women and four men accepted the evidence of 36-year-old Hughes and 42-year-old Owen.
Owen, of Parkfields, Abram, Wigan and Hughes, of Liverpool Road, Ainsdale, Southport, had both denied assault causing actual bodily harm.
