CHARLES GRAHAM: Staycations have fewer risks and are better for the economy

Call it force of habit, adventurousness or simply a yearning for warmer climes: there has certainly been a keenness among some of us Brits still to holiday abroad this year, even if the world hasn’t rid itself of Covid-19

Sad to report then that those who gambled on trips to Spain this week now face an unexpected 14-day quarantine on their return to Blighty following a spike in cases - and there are fears other overseas destinations could also be affected in the days and weeks to come.

Terrible news for many and not least those UK businesses that depend on travel to foreign lands.

But having just returned from an excellent fortnight of explorations on mainland Britain, particularly the spectacular North Yorkshire coast, there are plenty or reasons for a 2020 staycation.

I know that won’t be to everyone’s liking (although I should point out that the weather was largely good), but I do think that in these unstable times, it’s best advised to hunt down treasures on our own doorstep.

Furthermore, with the economy facing its greatest tribulations in centuries, wouldn’t it be helpful for everyone to spend their holiday money here?
