LUKE MARSDEN: Hallowe'en with a difference

Happy Hallowe’en! Let’s be honest today (and this entire year!) is more of a trick than a treat.

Cast your mind back to last Hallowe’en, with kids knocking on your door asking for some free sweets, choosing the politically correct costume for them to wear to the neighbour’s house or even one too many pumpkin punches at a party.

Jump forward to 2020 and all of that is now illegal.

Ironically, wearing a mask is now preferred all year round not just on All Hallows Eve.

On my Facebook timeline this week it reminded me of Hallowe’en 2017, I ventured out to King Street dressed in a jail jumpsuit and a scream mask, unsure exactly what look I was going for but it didn’t matter. Ibiza Bar was like a jumble sale of Hallowe’en costumes and cheap drinks. It was a great night. A very distant memory now as we’ve seen the real frights this year.

Perhaps for many, Hallowe’en this year will be exactly the same as previous: watching scary films on the couch with a truckload of sweets to enjoy.

I’ve already had my own trick this week; I got landed with a roof bill to fix some damage so that will probably set me back into further Hallowe’ens to come.

If you’re trying to make the most of this year’s All Hallows Eve then good luck but if nothing else right now, dressing up as a witch or devil may well be the answer to escaping the horrors of 2020 so far.

Somebody recommended virtual trick-or-treating to me, I’m not quite sure anyone would see the benefits of not getting some sweets at the end of that but if a Zoom Hallowe’en party is the best this year can offer then I’ll dig out my Dracula teeth.
