LUKE MARSDEN - The week I rediscovered exercise

After another week of home seclusion, wondering if life will ever go back to normal, I’m writing this after a walk through Haigh Hall.

This week I’ve rediscovered exercise.

Now I’m not about to turn into a yoga fanatic or pop on spandex gym shorts (I thankfully don’t own any) and go all Joe Wicks on you, but I’ve felt sluggish all week, concerned I’ll look like Jabba The Hut once lockdown is over, so I made a pledge to myself that I’d make the most of our one hour a day outside and actually go outside.

Living in Whelley I’m fortunate to have easy access to Haigh Hall so I’ve been going for long walks into the woods and along the canal.

I did contemplate trying to walk to either Leeds or Liverpool but figured hitchhiking back isn’t state-approved.

If you’ve felt your own routine thrown out of the window and, like me, worry you aren’t getting any exercise at all, then I don’t need Martin Lewis to share this money-saving tip with you: go get some fresh air, it’s free!

Now I know not everyone will have the luxury of being able to be out of the house for the full hour but even 15 minutes outside can make all of the difference, it’s looking unlikely we’ll be able to jet off to Benidorm for a week this year so we may as well soak up the vitamin D that Wigan has to offer.

Maybe it’s the fact we’ve been on lockdown for a month now but strolling through Haigh Hall I began to notice things I probably would’ve overlooked, like who chops the trees into those large chunks and just leaves them?

What’s the point? Clearly my GCSE in psychology is now finally paying for itself. Maybe I do need to get out more…
