But flares and smoke bombs are banned from professional football matches for a good reason in the UK. There were few better demonstrations of why than when an idiot lit a flare at a Latics match at the DW Stadium last season which resulted in a boy’s being treated for lung damage. Illegal use of flares has risen sharply in the last three seasons and it is right that the footballing authorities have launched a crusade to stamp out these dangerous devices before someone gets killed.
