MANY local authorities have adopted a waste collection rota similar to the one in operation in Wigan borough.
Having several bins for different purposes took some getting used to but the figures released by the council today show that they have been making a difference in terms of recycling rates.
We all need to do our bit to help the environment and managing your waste and the multiple bin system is part of that.
We’re sure many of you will have adopted your own way of getting used to the new method and the question “is it a green/black/blue week, this week?” is one often heard in households across Wigan.
All those efforts do add up though; the council has been able to make a saving of more than £1m by reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill sites.
Changes to household services do take some time to get used to but it appears that fortnightly rota collections are now firmly bedded in.
And hopefully recycle rates will continue to increase in the future.
