Comment - Boost for disabled shoppers

A VAST number of services in the borough are facing difficult futures as budget cuts begin to bite.

So it’s refreshing to see Shopmobility take pre-emptive action to ensure it can continue its crucial work in the borough.

The service, which provides scooters and wheelchairs for town centre shoppers with mobility problems, has been granted charity status and is embarking on a major fund-raising drive.

And it has already gained support from singers the Lancashire Hotpots, who are patrons of the charity.

The positive work of Shopmobility is far-reaching. Its children’s service gives youngsters with mobility problems the chance to use smaller powered scooters and electric or manual wheelchairs.

And Shopmobility volunteers accompany blind and partially sighted people during shopping trips to the town centre.

These vital services will now only be able to continue through the good nature of Wigan folk.
