IT is at times of crisis and stress that there is a tendency to think about number one.
Wiganers could perhaps be forgiven for adopting such an attitude as the carve-up of the town’s beloved JJB Sports was laid bare yesterday.
Once a retail colossus with getting on for 500 stores, today just 20 of its surviving outlets – after years of decline and closures – have been deemed worthy of purchase by its deadliest rival.
And those will be subsumed into the Sports Direct machine, meaning that those letters JJB will soon vanish from the high street altogether.
All of the remaining 160-plus stores are doomed to close and there will be thousands of redundancies.
The Robin Park store is among those axed and more than 100 jobs are going at Martland Mill HQ and depot.
But Sports Direct has decided it can use this huge complex and therefore more than 200 Wigan jobs have been saved.
And that, at least, is a qualified relief for local folk and the Wigan economy.
