COMMENT - Let’s hope for better times for iconic club

THE theft of thousands of pounds of music equipment from Goose Green Sports and Social Club is sadly just one more example of the difficulties entertainment venues face in this day and age.

The venue’s future has recently been under something of a cloud, with allegations of mismanagement leading to its owner, cabaret performer John Martin, opting to take over the running of the currently-closed club himself.

It is a great shame that his efforts to provide a top-class entertainment facility, which will potentially be enjoyed by thousands of Wiganers, have been so callously disrupted.

However, Mr Martin has emphatically stated the burglary has not affected his resolve to get the club up and running as soon as possible.

This is extremely welcome news. The club, particularly under its former name Goose Green Labour Club, is an iconic venue on the town’s cabaret and entertainment scene, with many people having fond memories of nights out there.

It would be a tremendous shame if so much history was lost.
