AFTER what seems like months it has been decided that Roberto Martinez is to leave Wigan Athletic.

While he managed to keep them in the Premier League against all the odds and provided the club with their greatest triumph in their history by winning the FA Cup it is hard not think that he has jumped ship a bit now that the team have been relegated to the Championship.

Whether he goes to Everton or back to Spain is by the by; what is important is who the Latics appoint to guide them through what will be a difficult Championship season.

Many think it is time for a change and while we all like to see pretty football it was debatable whether the Martinez way would have worked out in the a second tier of English football. Dave Whelan has a crucial decision to make and this could be the most important managerial appointment in the club’s history. A proven manager is needed. Come on Dave – no half measures – get the right man to get Wigan up.
