THE waiting is finally over and the much-trumpeted Wigan Youth Zone is now open and ready for business.
It is hoped that thousands of young people from all over the borough – not just those communities closest to Wigan town centre – will now sign up as members of what is said to be the best boys and girls’ club in Europe.
Millions of pounds of private money have been ploughed into the recession-busting project, the council has pledged substantial sums for its running costs over the next three years at least, and work is well under way to secure a steady flow of charitable donations to sustain the facilities for evermore.
The roots of the zone lie in the memory of Latics chairman Dave Whelan who credits the old Wigan Boys’ Club for transforming his life when he was a young tearaway. And there is no reason why the new centre cannot do a lot more than provide a stunning array of diversions for our current young generation. Unexpected career paths may begin here and future sporting legends discovered.
There’s only one way to find out: explore now!
