I AM trying to change my diet and lead a healthier lifestyle but I can’t seem to cut out snacking. Are there any healthy foods that you would recommend snacking on? Chris, 31, Wigan.
The Colonel says: Chris, firstly I would like to say congrats on taking steps to lead a healthy lifestyle, this is really great to see! Secondly, you’re in luck, there are heaps of different delicious foods that I would class as ‘healthy snacks’ so throw out the crisps and let’s get started. There is much confusion around snacking and what is and isn’t good for your body, so the most important thing to remember is that not everyone is the same, but if you’re currently snacking on junk food then you don’t need me to tell you that these are far from healthy! When most people decide to eat healthily, they tend to turn to rice cakes and dried fruits, which are all great alternatives, but in excess they can be just as bad for you. With healthy eating it all comes down to moderation; don’t overcompensate by eating dried mango in the bucket load, as this will counteract all your hard work. So, stick to the old proverb ... it’s more about the quality of the food you’re eating, not the quantity.
So, what healthy food would I recommend? Well Chris, I’m an almond lover and with good reason ... these little nuts are said to aid weight loss and are full of minerals to help keep you healthy. Almonds contain calcium, magnesium, protein and fibre and eating a handful of almonds a day will give you the boost that your body needs.
If you’re not feeling that, then how about avocado chunks? Avocado is a real super food and helps speed up your metabolism, which is essential for weight loss! It’s also full of healthy fatty acids and antioxidants which make it the perfect tool for your fat burning fire! You could also try snacking on berries; I would suggest choosing the darker berries, such as blueberries and raspberries, as these are chock-a-block with antioxidants and are much lower in fructose!
So Chris, I hope this has helped answer your question and shown you some brilliant healthy alternatives that you can snack on ... but remember everything in moderation!
