The Liam Farrell column: '˜We're satisfied, but there's more to come'

The most pleasing part of our 28-12 win against Castleford last Friday was how we dealt with their attack.

We beat them in the energy battle early on and we contained a lot of what they threw at us. Defensively we were pretty good and, given our recent record against them, you’ve got to say it was a pretty good win in the end.

To limit them to zero points in the second-half was some effort. I managed to get over for a try - believe me, the pirouette was not planned, I’m not trying to emulate Henry Paul!

Before the Leeds game earlier this month, we were content with how we were travelling but I said then that we wanted to beat a top-four side, following the losses to Saints and Warrington.

We’ve now beaten last year’s Grand Finalists, on successive Fridays, and now we’ve played everyone once.

My assessment of the first-half of the regular campaign?

Quite happy... but I really do believe there is more to come from us yet.

We’re not where we want to be and that’s quite a good thing, because you want to be improving and building; you wouldn’t want to be fulfilling your potential in the first third of the season.

We’re hoping to keep our run going against Widnes tomorrow.

As far as I can remember, we’ve not had a comfortable win at their place.

We either seem to lose, draw or get a narrow win - they’re a different side at home.

Their artificial pitch does come into play. It’s a fast track to play on and Widnes know how to use it to their advantage.

The Challenge Cup always throws up the possibility of drawing a lower-league side.

It’s interesting when you do go to those grounds - the games are usually rough and tough - but this year, we’ve got a game at Hull KR.

We’ve had quite a few tough games at their place, as well as in the Cup three years ago in Leigh which they won, and so there will be nobody taking them for granted.

There are some interesting ties. Castleford-St Helens is the obvious stand-out but I also think Leigh-Salford should be a cracker.

The Centurions seem to have picked up and Salford have had a good season so far.

I was chatting to Blake Green the other days and he said Anthony Gelling had really fitted in well at the New Zealand Warriors.

It was nice to see Gells score his first try in the NRL last weekend.

I don’t have an NRL team I support; I tend to change year to year, depending where I have former team-mates!

And with Greeny and Gells at the Warriors, I hope they have a successful year.
