AN ELDERLY woman was flung to the ground as she fought in vain to stop a mugger stealing her handbag.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the robbery which took place at around 5.30pm on Tuesday.

The 82-year-old woman was walking on Lancaster Road, Hindley, when the assailant ran up behind her and grabbed her bag.

There was a struggle and she was dragged to the floor before he tore the bag from her grasp and made off towards Gloucester Crescent.

He is described as white, in his late teens/early 20s, of medium/athletic build, had short brown hair, was clean shaven and was wearing dark shorts, a vest and trainers.

Det Con Danny Ritchie said: “This man has sought out an elderly victim as she has been seen as an easy target.

“He has also proved how much of a coward he is by approaching his victim from behind and knocking her to the floor.

“I would appeal to anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the crime and saw what happened, to contact us immediately.

“We are determined to catch this man but need the public’s help in doing so.”
