Body found in canal in Wigan was man who had been missing since Sunday

A man whose body was found in the canal in Wigan has been named.

The body of Darren Hunt, 47, was discovered in the Leeds-Liverpool Canal near Leigh Street on Monday afternoon.

Earlier that day, police had appealed for help to find Mr Hunt who had not been seen since 10pm on Sunday, when he was outside the Nisa store in Ince Bar.

There are not thought to be any suspcious circumstances surrounding his death.

Bolton Coroner's Court confirmed they had received a file regarding Mr Hunt's death and an inquest has not yet been opened.

His death comes shortly after coroner Timothy Brennand raised safety concerns about that stretch of the canal, after the bodies of two men were recovered weeks apart.
