Firefighters say that even though many people are now staying at home all the time it is still crucial to have the alarms acting as an early-warning system should anything go wrong in the house.

Crews were called to the properties on Woodhouse Lane after smoke began issuing from one of the houses.

It is believed the problem was caused by a problem with a power line and Electricity North West attended the scene.

Watch manager Carl Gleaves from Wigan fire station said: "The only positive thing I can take from this incident is people are able to identify problems like this and call them in because they are confined to the house.

"People need to double check their smoke alarms work. The sense of security during daylight hours from being at home is great but at night you are still vulnerable.

"Smoke alarms provide that early-warning system."
