Fly-tipped waste left at local beauty spot

The pile of household waste, including items of furniture, was spotted at the location last week.

The rubbish was left at one of the area’s most attractive natural sites, where a river flows through woodland to create a green oasis which is a popular destination for Wigan walkers and those looking to enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors.

West Lancashire Borough Council says it will be looking through the rubbish for evidence of who left it and warned fly-tippers that they could end up in court if there is enough proof for local authorities to bring a case.

As well as making lovely parts of the area appear unsightly, the council pointed out that fly-tipping also requires attention from public sector employees currently at full stretch dealing with the demands of the novel coronavirus.

A spokesperson for the council said: “If waste is dumped we need to take our staff away from our essential services to clear it away.

“Staff members have searched the site for evidence as to who is responsible for dumping this waste and the team will remove the waste as soon as possible.

“We would like to remind residents that fly-tipping is a criminal offence and we will endeavour to prosecute anyone caught fly-tipping waste in the borough.”
