Leeds and Liverpool Canal clogging up due to lack of boat traffic

These pictures of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal as it runs around Haigh Woodland Park, taken by Wigan Post reader Chris Winstanley, show the waterway at its tranquil finest.

But one image does draw attention to an unusual sight for this usually busy channel. And that is the amount of water flora growing and congesting on the surface.

This is due to the canal’s not having been disturbed by any boats for several weeks now due to the lockdown. That doesn’t mean that the towpaths are quiet though. These pictures are unusual in that respect too because the local canalsides have become some of the busier routes for pedestrians on their hour-a-day’s exercise.
