The famous phrase “it could be you” really does apply when it comes to lucky lottery players in Wigan.
The borough has been named one of the top areas in the country for the number of National Lottery winners.
The WN post code was ranked ninth among the areas where players were most likely to win a major prize
The post codes were ranked by the number of prizes of £50,000 or more won per head of adult population since the National Lottery began.
A host of Wigan players have scooped massive windfalls over the years.
Just last week, the Post reported a mystery lottery winner in Wigan had just a month left to claim a Lotto Millionaire Raffle prize worth £1m.
They won in the February 28 draw but had still not claimed the cash.
Andrew and Natalie Cunliffe returned to Hindley’s Asda store in June, two years after winning £1m on a National Lottery £100 Million Cash Spectacular scratch card.
Andrew, a construction company site manager who was working in Hindley, bought the card on a supermarket run to get tea bags for his workmates.
The couple, from Blackpool, had their dream wedding in Cyprus thanks to the cash.
Midwife Ruth Breen, from Poolstock, won £1m in the Euromillions Millionaire’s Raffle in 2014.
She was told of the win by email, saying at the time: “When I read it, I couldn’t believe my eyes and counted the zeros several times, there were so many of them it was phenomenal. I had to get my manager to check is this for real? It was ridiculous.”
She said her daughter Lucy’s education would be her “number one priority” and she would support the Amanda Penk Fund, set up in memory of her close friend. She also wanted to buy a Wigan Warriors’ season ticket, shoes and a handbag.
The TS postcode, which includes Middlesbrough, Hartlepool and Stockton-on-Tees, had more winners per head than anywhere else in the country. The South East had the most millionaires.
