Major road closed due to incident at Wigan hospital

Emergency services shut Wigan Lane in both directions for around an hour on Friday evening.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) received reports of a person in distress on the roof of a building at Wigan Infirmary at around 5.45pm.

A large number of police and fire service vehicles, including a specialist rescue unit, were sent to the scene.

Officers engaged with the man and he came down from the roof before being taken to hospital.

Motorists travelling towards Wigan Infirmary out of the town centre were diverted along Clifton Crescent while the incident was dealt with.

The road reopened at around 6.40pm.
