Young fans were not quite sure what to make of Dr. Who, alias actor Tom Baker, when he landed at a Wigan town centre newsagents to sign autographs and publicise the new Dr. Who book in April 1976.

Esther Rantzen, best known as presenter of television's "Thats Life", enjoys a cuppa with workers during a visit to the Croda glue works factory at Appley Bridge in 1971 as part of tv programme "Braden's Week".

Comedian Syd Little of comedy duo Little and Large fame, decorating his new house in Atherton in January 1977. Syd, whose real name was Cyril Mead, was a painter and decorator before teaming up with his comedy partner and had just moved into the area at the height of their fame.
