Snowy start to weekend in Wigan

The Met Office has issued an amber cold weather alert for the weekend.

Forecasters urged residents to keep an eye on family and friends who might be vulnerable to the low temperatures.

Wigan Council said the maintenance teams would be out and about keeping the borough's network of main roads gritted.

However, the steady fall of the white stuff was expected to create difficult driving conditions across the borough on Saturday.

The town hall also reminded people that grit bins could be used for local roads.

Residents were also encouraged to stay safe and keep warm.

The Met Office website suggested the cold spell could last until the start of Tuesday in some parts of England.
