Tributes as teenage 'superhero' dies following brave battle with incurable disease

The Golborne teenager was admitted to Wigan Infirmary after he began feeling poorly but his condition deteriorated and he was transferred to the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

He died with his family around him on the day he was moved into the intensive care unit.

His grieving family today spoke of their enormous loss and paid emotional tribute to the Hope School pupil.

Layton’s mum Stacey Burtonwood said: “Layton was so amazing. He fought it for so long and was so brave. He was just a superhero.

“He died with everybody he loved around him holding his hands.

“I can’t even imagine my life without him. I don’t have a purpose right now.

“Everyone who came into contact with him absolutely loved him. He was always smiling. When we put posts up on Facebook if he was sad or upset he made me retake the photo. He was always trying to be positive, he didn’t want anybody to see him in pain.

“He’s going to be missed so much by everybody.”

Stacey spoke of Layton’s love of superheroes like Captain America and computer games and described his close bond with his family of Stacey, stepdad James Burtonwood and siblings Tyrese, Tillie and Logan as well as his dad James Bancroft, his wife Michelle and daughter Mya.

She said he also loved his Staffordshire bull terrier Oreo and even when in hospital was determined to get well enough to return home to be reunited with his beloved pet.

Layton's funeral is on February 10 and residents are expected to line the streets to see the coffin depart from Alan Jones Funeral Directors on High Street at 10.30am.

However, his family has urged anyone who does to ensure they observe social distancing at all times.
