A worthy cause was at “steak” when a butchery store trainee manager braved one of the hottest days of the year to cross the borough on foot from one store in his chain to another.

Lee Peake works for Meat Mart in Wigan and on Friday he set off from its sister outlet in Astley 10 miles away and ran his way back to the one in Newtown.

And it was all in aid of Manchester Children’s paediatric theatres.

Both stores gifted two £50 meat hampers to help raise money so anyone who donated was entered into a draw for them.

The 38-year-old father of one from Swinley had raised the best part of £1,000 by the time his run was completed.

He said: “I set off at noon and had given myself 90 minutes to complete it in, so I was very happy to get in at 1.30pm, especially considering how warm it was.

“The run went pretty smoothly though and I just pressed on and finished it without stopping.”

All monies raised from his just giving page and money raise in store will go to charity.

He chose his cause because girlfriend Susan Sharrock works at Manchester Children’s Hospital and said they had been “rushed off their feet” during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Lee added: “I just wanted to do something to help and set myself a £500 target, so it was very pleasing to have doubled it.”
