A community centre has been draped with new banners encouraging people to be kind, shop local and support each other.

One House in Aspull, a community hub supporting people having difficulties in their lives, is backing Wigan Council’s Be Kind campaign.

The banners were bought using Brighter Borough funding, which is given to councillors each year to help fund projects benefiting the community.

The allowance was originally due to be renewed in May, but money were released early by the council so councillors could make immediate plans during the pandemic.

The funding came from councillors Chris Ready and Ron Conway, who represent Aspull, New Springs and Whelley.

They said: “In these difficult times it’s important to get messages across and this was an ideal time to shout from the rooftops key messages like buy local, support one another and be kind.”

Kathleen Marsh, trustee and volunteer at the One House, said: “We can’t thank Chris and Ron enough for this nice gesture. These are the messages we’ve been putting out all the time. Our communities have really come together and local businesses have supported us 100 per cent.

“Once we get back to normal the One House will be bigger and better, so remember to be kind and support your community.”

As Baroness Barran said in a House of Lords debate this week on the importance of journalists: "Not only are they a trusted source of facts, but they will have a role to play in rallying communities and getting the message across about how we can keep ourselves and our families safe, and protect our NHS. Undoubtedly, they have a critical role."

But being your eyes and ears comes at a price. So we need your support more than ever to buy our newspapers during this crisis. In return we will continue to forensically cover the local news - not only the impact of the virus but all the positive and uplifting news happening in these dark days.

We thank all our readers and advertisers for their understanding and support - and we wish YOU all the best in the coming weeks. Keep safe, and follow the Government advice. Thank you.
