Not-for-profit organisation Sport Rebooted has received National Lottery funding to buy some 260 items to be distributed to dozens of families across the borough.

The gifts all promote physical or mental health, with arts and crafts equipment, skateboards, scooters and rollerblades all being given out to families who would otherwise struggle to provide presents for their children to open on Christmas Day.

Sport Rebooted is a community interest company (CIC) led by Andy Gore and Mark Glover which started out collecting second-hand boots and trainers for children whose parents couldn’t afford to buy them equipment to play sport.

Andy, from Standish, said: “The items we’re distributing stick with our theme of wellbeing.

“We’re giving out arts and crafts for mental health, board games to promote families spending time together and then things for physical health.

“We’re ordering items specifically for each family and then we’re making arrangements to take them during the day while the children are still at school and won’t see the deliveries.

“The parents will then need to wrap them up so they are a surprise on Christmas Day.”

Sport Rebooted has worked with Wigan Council to identify which families would benefit from its festive generosity.

The CIC has been helping struggling families throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, distributing outdoor and indoor games and sports equipment such as skittles, swing ball and small football nets during the summer.
