Wigan prepares for 'Frost Fest' virtual Christmas activities

Wigan borough is all set to kick-off the festive season with an exciting Christmas event that residents can enjoy from the comfort of their own homes.

After the government announced national lockdown restrictions from November 5, Wigan Council swiftly worked with local bands and presenter, Chris Milow to ensure the festive show can still go ahead in line with Covid-19 guidance.

Aside from a few minor changes to the schedule, a pre-recorded show called ‘Frost Fest Virtual Christmas’, will be streamed on November 21 across a number of social media platforms, including Wigan Council and a new events page called This is Wigan.

Popular band, The Lancashire Hotpots, will be the headlining act and the event will kick off at 7pm.

Leader of Wigan Council, Coun David Molyneux said: “Following the national lockdown announcement last week, we took another look at our pending Frost Fest event to ensure it complied with new government guidance.

“Thankfully, we were ahead of the curve in planning a pre-recorded, virtual show, which we are committed to broadcasting on our social media channels to bring festive cheer to residents’ homes.”

Ashton’s light will be switched on first, followed by Leigh and Wigan town centres.

Performances with local bands have been recorded and will stream alongside local business videos, encouraging people to shop local this Christmas.

Coun Molyneux added: “The lead up to Christmas is always a vibrant time in our borough and we’re keen to ensure our families can still access some of the activities they traditionally enjoy.

“Our independent retailers also really need our support, so we’re also encouraging people to shop local this Christmas to help our small businesses through the pandemic.

“We’re excited about the first digital Frost Fest and look forward to delivering more shows in different ways while still bringing our communities together.”
