Josh Mawdsley, 14, a student at Hawkley High School, was diagnosed with a brain tumour on August 21 last year.

Despite making an incredible battle against this vicious disease, St Judes Amateur Rugby League Club where Josh has played for the u13s, confirmed he died last night (August 12).

In a moving statement on its website, the club said: "It is with heavy hearts and incredible sadness we must announce that we lost our warrior, Josh Mawdsley, last night.

"Josh fought an incredible battle against this vicious disease and overcame so many hurdles. We hoped that he would hear good news following his extremely invasive chemo sessions, but unfortunately the cancer had spread and Josh didn't make it home from hospital. He fought on so much, surpassing the expectations of so many medical experts but, in the end, he passed peacefully with his mum, Liz, by his side. At the tender age of 14.

"Josh leaves a huge hole at our club and an irreplaceable void in the lives of his u14s team mates and coaching staff.

"We are devastated but so grateful to have known such a caring, talented young man. Josh played with phenomenal passion but also showed incredible kindness toward both his teammates and opponents. He will be so sadly missed by all."

The club also thanked those who raised funds for Josh which included a JustGiving page which raised nearly £6,000. A fundraiser was also held at the rugby club last September which included a singer and compere and a tombola full of donated prizes.

The club added: "To all of those who raised funds for him to enjoy life whilst he could, we are forever grateful. Josh was overwhelmed by the support and the messages during his fight.

"Wigan St Judes send our deepest sympathy to all of his family at this time. He will never be forgotten at our club and within the rugby community.

"Goodnight and God bless to our lovely Josh x "
