WIGANERS can come together to enjoy a special Proms in the Park concert as part of a weekend of events commemorating the centenary of the outbreak of World War One.
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust (WLCT) is organising the event in Mesnes Park which will transport concert-goers back to the golden era of jazz and brass music, with performances from the Swingtime Big Band and Tyldesley Brass Band.
Residents are being encouraged to bring a picnic along to the outdoor event on Saturday evening, which forms part of the Between the Crosses commemorative weekend.
Concert-goers are encouraged to bring flags to give the town centre park an authentically patriotic Last Night of the Proms feel, while there will also be children’s rides and other entertainment.
The evening of commemoration will end with a spectacular firework display lighting up the night sky over Wigan town centre.
Anyone attending is welcome to bring picnics and furniture such as chairs, though barbecues will not be permitted.
The Picnic Proms starts at 6pm. Tickets are available in advance priced at £10 for adults and £7 for concessions, with a family ticket for two adults and two children under 16 costing £28.
There may also be some tickets available on the day at £12 for adults and £8 for concessions, with family tickets at £34.
