Pie trophy stays in Wigan

WIGAN gained yet more silverware as the World Pie Eating Championships title remained in the borough yesterday despite international competition.

Amid scenes of great drama at Harry’s Bar in Wigan town centre, Orrell security officer Ian Coulton ensured the borough would still be home to the planet’s fastest pie-eater by narrowly coming out on top in the high-stakes contest.

Starting on the stroke of Pie Noon with event organiser Tony Callaghan’s now-famous exhortation to: “Get eatin’!” Ian, 38, scoffed his pie in just over a minute to beat 18 other contestants who had travelled from as far afield as Australia to compete for the Bradley Piggins Trophy.

Ian, of Tracks Lane, said: “I was surprised to win. I thought I had a good chance but didn’t think I was the favourite.

“At one stage I didn’t think I was going to win but I really enjoyed the whole thing.

“I’ve already got a signed Lancashire cricket bat at home on the mantelpiece so this will look excellent alongside it.

“I told me my dad David and he said it’s not going to do much for my reputation! But I’ve already had calls from a couple of friends congratulating me on my win.”
