A LEGENDARY former Wigan nightclub goes under the hammer this month.
Wigan Pier, in Pottery Road, will be up for auction at Pugh and Co’s next sale on February 28.
The club closed its doors in December 2011, following a long battle with environmental protection watchdogs over noise and first went on the market last March,
Now that a buyer has failed to come forward, it will be auctioned off.
The club, which was started by Lennons Leisure more than 40 years ago, was under the ownership of Darshan Sidhu, when it closed.
Thwaites Brewery then took over the building and offered a sublease for a term.
The 7,706 sq ft nightclub and bar, which is in need of some refurbishment, has a bottom guide price of £110,000.
The auctioneers also advise that the property would suit a continuation of its existing use, or a change of use could also be agreed, subject to planning.
David Henderson was the manager of Wigan Pier for 21 years and remains sceptical about the building’s future.
He said: “The building is now derelict and has not been well maintained.
“It is very sad as it was once a thriving business, which employed around 35 local people, and had clubbers coming from all over the country.”
The Pugh and Co auction will take place at Manchester United Football Club on Thursday, February 28 with the commercial sale commencing at noon.
Also up for auction is a single-storey detached former cinema in Market Street, Atherton, starting at £60,000.
