PLANS for an ambitious new development of around 470 homes on land beside the Leeds and Liverpool Canal have been unveiled.
Brown field land off Plank lane and Firs Lane, in Westleigh, which is owned by the Canal and River Trust (CRT) and Wigan Council, has been earmarked for the Westleigh Waterfront development.
The 51-acre site stretches from Westleigh Cricket Club’s ground in the east along the bank of the Leigh branch of the canal as far as Bickershaw Lane in the west.
The landowners intend to submit a joint outline planning application to the town hall’s planning committee later this year but before that residents will be invited to have their say at a consultation event this week.
A CRT spokesman said: “Our aim is to create an attractive, high-quality waterside development which incorporates formal open space, landscaping and play areas.
“We are also planning to include a new cycle-friendly footbridge over the canal linking to Pennington Flash Country Park and a pathway on the north side of the canal to connect eastwards to Leigh town centre and westwards to the new marina.”
Residents will get their first look at the plans when they are unveiled at a consultation evening this Thursday at Westleigh Cricket Club.
Specialists from the project team will be on hand to explain the proposals in more detail and those living nearby will be able to comment on the draft plans.
The Trust also reassured residents there will be further opportunities to make their voices heard once the planning application has been submitted.
Wigan Council must provide at least 1,000 new homes each year until 2026 to meet the borough’s identified housing needs.
