DETAILS of a retail unit shake-up at Robin Park have been released, revealing Wigan will soon have a KFC drive-through.
Approval has been granted for four new units to be built on current car parking space close to Robin Park Drive.
The Observer can reveal the tenants are expected to be mobile company EE, Subway, Carphone Warehouse and a Costa drive-through.
A further planning application has now been submitted for a change of use for the existing Carphone Warehouse unit to become the KFC drive-through, which will create dozens of jobs.
The details have been revealed in a planning report submitted by retail park owners Henderson UK Property.
It will mean the fast-food giant will now be yards away from Robin Park’s Burger King outlet and within a mile of a McDonald’s drive-through at the other side of Saddle Junction.
KFC declined to comment on the plans when asked by the Observer but the report states: “The proposed drive through restaurant also represents an additional investment by KFC in Wigan which will complement the existing KFC restaurant at Standishgate in the town centre.
“The unit was originally intended to be occupied as a drive through restaurant.”
The document also confirms what has been long been rumoured that Costa would be taking up the new drive-through facility. Original planning designs had shown Costa branding but the coffee firm has to date declined to confirm or deny its intentions.
A statement issued last year, which the company has declined to update, read: “We are currently evaluating drive-thru opportunities in the Wigan area, but have no firm plans in place at this stage.
The Henderson statement adds: “The proposals will generate approximately 40 new jobs in a mix of full time and part-time positions.
“This represents a significant net economic benefit for the town.”
