At around 7pm on Thursday, March 9 police were called to reports of an assault on Church Street.

A 21-year-old man was driving down the street when he saw five men emerge from an alleyway by a pub.

At this point, he was hit in the face with a large bottle. Shocked and bleeding heavily, he got back in his car and drove away, seriously injured.

Detective Constable Kevin Telford of GMP's Wigan Borough, said: "This man was trying to help break up a fight, but was left with serious injuries on his face and a broken tooth as a result of his bravery.

"At this time, it is likely that a lot of people would have been in the area, so anyone who may have seen something is encouraged to come forward."
