Concerned that the group was fighting, the victim stopped and got out of his car.

At this point, he was hit in the face with a large bottle. Shocked and bleeding heavily, he got back in his car and drove away, seriously injured.

Detective Constable Kevin Telford of GMP's Wigan Borough, said: "This man was trying to help break up a fight, but was left with serious injuries on his face and a broken tooth as a result of his bravery.

"At this time, it is likely that a lot of people would have been in the area, so anyone who may have seen something is encouraged to come forward."

Anyone with information should contact police on 0161 856 7292 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
